BANGKOK, 28 November 2014 – Palan Center for the Development and Occupational Promotion of the Elderly has been selected by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), as the first center having the readiness to serve the country’s aging society.
MSDHS Minister Pol Gen Adul Sangsingkaew has visited the center in Hang Dong district, Chiang Mai province.
The Palan Center is among the 878 centers across Thailand which the government has set up to development the elder’s quality of life. It has around 1,700 members and provides such services as physical rehabilitation, primary health care, and occupational training for the elderly.
At present, 13% of the Thai population, or nine million people, are elders. The figure is expected to reach 25% in 2027. This has prompted Thailand a need to prepare necessary services for older persons.
More than 80,000 volunteers have been recruited and stationed at the Elderly Development Centers nationwide. They have played a key role in taking care of senior citizens in local communities.
