BANGKOK, Oct 28 – The parents of two Myanmar men detained for the alleged murder of two British tourists on Ko Tao island of Surat Thani province on September 15 have petitioned the attorney general for justice as they believe in their sons’ innocence.

This morning the parents of Win Zaw Htun and Zaw Lin, suspected of killing Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, went to the Office of the Attorney General to file their petition.

They arrived with lawyers and representatives of the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok.

Kosolwat Inthuchanyong, deputy spokesman of the Office of the Attorney General, received their complaint.

The father of one suspect said that they visited both Myanmar men and both told them that they had been assaulted and forced to confess.

Later the parents’ delegation went to the Office of the National Human Rights Commission to file a similar petition.

Receiving it, human rights commissioner Niran Pitakwatchara said the commission would attempt to verify the claim of the physical assaults.

He also said that the commission would inquire about the case from police again on November 3 as the police had not given a clear answer in their three previous meetings.

The parents visited their sons at Ko Samui prison last Friday.

Tawatchai Siangjaew, executive director of the Region 8 Public Prosecution Office, who handles the case said yesterday that the prosecution was awaiting more information from police before deciding on the case.
