PATTANI, 6 May 2015 – Pattani province has launched a 24-hour port in-port out controlling center in the hope to prevent illegal fishing and human trafficking in the fishing industry.
Pattani Governor Wiraphong Kaeosuwan on Wednesday presided over the opening ceremony of the center. It is a collaboration between the navy, the Department of Fisheries, the Marine Department, the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare, the police, the Department of Local Administration and local fishery groups.
The center is part of the Thai government’s urgent work after the EU threatened to ban Thai seafood exports if the problem of IUU fishing is not tackled efficiently within six months.
The governor asked all relevant units in the province to encourage entrepreneurs in the fishing industry and fishing boats to register with the authorities.
