BANGKOK, Dec 18  – Senior officials of the Pollution Control Department spearhead a campaign to reduce air pollution by prohibiting personal car use every Wednesday to urge all sectors to help cut PM2.5 particulate matter.

Starting the campaign yon Dec 18, Director of the Pollution Control Department, Pralong Damrongthai took sky train to work this morning as his department asks for cooperation from about 549 senior officials and civil servants to stop using personal cars every Wednesday and to switch to use public transportations and electric trains instead.

The campaign is aimed to set an example of reducing PM2.5 emission, so other agencies and public members will follow suit.

Most officials at the Pollution Control Department joined the campaign to reduce air pollution and travelled by bus and skytrain to work today. Some were seen riding bicycles.

The air quality readings in Bangkok on Wednesday at 8 a.m. by the department’s application “Air4Thai” showed the PM 2.5 particulate matter levels exceeded safety standard in several areas including Din Daeng district, Bang Khun Thian district and Pathumwan district.
