BANGKOK, 22 June 2014 -The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) has found that the electricity consumption in the South has started to exceed its supply capacity, asking the residents to save power immediately.

The PEA’s Deputy Governor of Electricity System Control Sakorn Payakkarueng, said that in regard to the 28-day closure of the electricity plant powered by natural gas from the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area (JDA- A18) from June 13th – July 10th, it notes that power consumption peaks at 7.30 pm, with a volume of 2,340 megawatts.

Every sector, therefore, is being asked to reduce its power consumption considerably from 6.30 pm – 10.30 pm to avoid a power shortage crisis. The power supply authorities again give the example of turning off unnecessary lighting and modifying the cooling temperature of air conditioners by a one degree increase.

For those who have successfully registered for the Demand-Response project, the PEA has asked them to reduce power consumption during the period June 19th to 26th June from 6.30-10.30 pm. saying they will receive a refund at a compensation rate of 4 baht per unit.
