Phayao – Phayao province is preparing to mark Vesak Day on May 29 with the world’s only candlelight procession on water.
The ceremony, which is being held in the province for the 33rd time, will take place around a floating platform that sits directly above the submerged Wat Tilok Aram in Phayao Lake.
At 6:30 am, an almsgiving ceremony for 99 monks will take place at Wat Tilok Aram Pier. At 5:30 pm, over 50 boats are expected to take part in the candlelight procession around the submerged temple. The centerpiece floating platform will also be illuminated.
Other activities will take place at the Phayao Municipality building. Local authorities will be stationed to maintain orderliness and security for the candlelight procession.
The province is inviting both Thai and foreign tourists to take part in the unique cultural experience.
