Pheu Thai Party will be forming a new government coalition without Move Forward Party, according to its leader Dr. Chonlanan Srikaew. Pheu Thai planned to announce on Thursday which party will be part of the new alliance.
This critical move by Pheu Thai came as Move Forward was not able to form an 8-party government coalition with its leader Pita Limjaroenrat nominated as Prime Minister. Mr. Pita did not receive enough endorsement votes in the joint assembly sitting between the House of Representatives and the Senate to become prime minister.
Pheu Thai is believed to be nominating one of its Prime Ministerial candidates, Mr. Srettha Thavisin, for the endorsement vote scheduled for 4 August.
In a press conference on Wednesday, PTP leader Dr. Chonlanan Srikaew, together with deputy party leader Phumtham Wechayachai and the party’s secretary general Prasert Jantararuangtong, said Move Forward was asked to step down from the coalition, given the disagreement on Lese Majeste law reform.
Pheu Thai will proceed to invite other parties beyond the initial 8-party alliance led by Move Forward to join the new government coalition, while Move Forward becomes an opposition party in the lower house.
Pheu Thai said it would work to maintain the monarchy’s status quo as the uniting institution of Thai people, while pursuing its agenda to solve the economic crisis and hardships faced by the people. (NNT)
