BANGKOK, ThailandAfter a viral Facebook post showing Phra V. Vajiramedhi meditating on snow in Japan stirred controversy, Phra Phayom Kalyano, abbot of Wat Suan Kaew in Nonthaburi, stepped forward to clarify that the action does not violate monastic discipline, October 20. He suggested that Phra V. Vajiramedhi was likely testing his endurance.

The drama has been ongoing, following earlier issues involving The Icon Group. The popular Facebook page “E-sor Khayee Khao” posted a picture of Phra V. Vajiramedhi meditating on snow in Japan, with the caption, “He went to practice Dhamma. For those saying he was there for leisure, take a look. He is meditating on snow, showing great endurance and admirable dedication.” The post quickly sparked a mix of praise and criticism, with some questioning the appropriateness of the act.

In response, Phra Phayom commented, “Our country doesn’t have snow, so seeing it for the first time, it’s natural for someone to want to walk or sit in it. Perhaps he wanted to test how cold it could be, which is a common human curiosity. Meditating like this is fine and not a violation.

However, if someone were to claim extraordinary powers, like flying or levitating, then it would be problematic. Opinions on this matter vary, but from my perspective, Phra V. Vajiramedhi is a person who enjoys exploration and study. In terms of violating any monastic rules, there is none, as he has not claimed any supernatural abilities.” (TNA)
