PHUKET, 15 Jan 2015, The Province of Phuket has vowed to step up its human trafficking prevention measures in the local fishery industry.
The resolution came during the meeting of the provincial administration, the labor office, and the marine office, as well as other related units.
According to Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong, since the province hosts a large number of foreign labors, it has to regulate its labor hiring process in compliance with the law, adding that human trafficking may stem from the high demand of workers in the fishery industry.
The Governor has called for the setting up of a committee to be tasked inspecting businesses that harbor illegal foreign labors in order to eliminate the province’s notorious human trafficking and drugs activities. The committee is also to keep track of foreign labors and monitor their population.
The committee will work closely with other related government agencies; businesses in each districts that employ foreign workers will be subjected to a monthly inspection, concluded the Governor.
