PHUKET, April 27 – A team of experts from Thailand’s Mineral Resources Department affirmed today that this idyllic Andaman Sea resort province will not submerge as a result of an earthquake.
The assurance was given after an examination of Phuket’s cumulative aftershocks following the recent earthquake in the province.
Mineral Resources Department’s Active Fault Research Division chief Suwit Kosuwan spoke at a news conference in Thalang district in response to concerns expressed following the recent earthquake of 4.3 Richter scale here on April 16.
He said that Phuket will not submerge due to an earthquake as 90 per cent of the island is supported by strong granite about hundred million years old and that the province is located on a wide surface of the earth.
Rumours have been circulating that the island will sink tomorrow (April 28) and caused considerable worry on the part of some local residents.
After examing the three subdistricts of Sakoo, Pa-Klok and Sri Soontorn, Mr Suwit said that the strength and seriousness of the aftershocks tends to become less. For the past five days, a seismograph has been testing the examined area with less than 1 Richter scale earthquake response, which Mr Suwit said will not cause any impact.
