Phumtham clarifies delays in Thai crew release, cites Myanmar’s internal coordination issues; assures ongoing diplomatic efforts for swift resolution.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai addressed the ongoing situation involving four Thai fishermen detained by Myanmar authorities, stating that the delay in their release is due to coordination challenges between officials in Kawthaung (Victoria Point) and the Myanmar central government. He assured that Thailand has already taken all necessary steps and remains committed to securing their release as quickly as possible.

Phumtham clarified that the matter is now awaiting a decision from the Myanmar government. “The issue lies within Myanmar’s internal communication and procedural requirements. While Thai authorities have completed all necessary coordination, the process is stalled on their side,” he said.

He further explained that Thailand has sent formal requests and is prepared to visit the detained individuals to ensure their safety and facilitate their return. However, the decision now rests solely with the Myanmar authorities.

When asked if there was any progress regarding a potential visit to the four Thai nationals, Phumtham noted, “I cannot say for certain. We are doing everything in our power to care for our citizens, but we must also respect Myanmar’s legal processes and await the completion of their procedures.”

Responding to inquiries about whether the delay might be politically motivated or linked to factors beyond a simple fishing dispute, Phumtham refrained from speculation, stating, “It is not appropriate to make assumptions. This is their process, and we must let them handle it accordingly.”

Phumtham also emphasized that initial discussions at the local level in Kawthaung were positive, but the matter has since been escalated to Myanmar’s central government for further deliberation. Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively engaged in diplomatic negotiations to resolve the situation.

The Deputy Prime Minister reassured that the four detained Thais remain in good health and are currently being held at a police station in Kawthaung. He urged patience, noting that similar cases involving cross-border legal matters often require time for resolution due to procedural and jurisdictional complexities.

“Let’s not speculate or overthink the situation. We are following the proper channels and will continue to work tirelessly to bring our people back home,” he concluded. (TNA)
