Phumtham Wechayachai has announced that he would review the annual military reshuffle list and a submarine deal with China before finalizing any decisions.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has announced that he would review the annual military reshuffle list and a submarine deal with China before finalizing any decisions. Phumtham, who recently began his role at the Defense Ministry, said he would carefully assess these issues, considering public and military opinions.

The submarine deal, initiated by his predecessor Sutin Klungsang, involves the purchase of a Chinese S26T Yuan-class submarine for 13.5 billion baht. The deal faced complications when the Chinese supplier could not provide a German-made engine, which was initially agreed upon, and instead offered a Chinese alternative. Phumtham said the deal would be revisited in light of these developments.

Phumtham also addressed the ongoing military reshuffle, which has yet to be completed due to disagreements over appointing a new navy chief. He confirmed discussions with the retiring navy chief, Admiral Adung Phan-iam, and noted that the reshuffle would proceed after further consultation with top military officials.
