The Prime Minister has issued a directive to cancel teachers’ duty to safeguard schools on weekends.
Chai Wacharongke, the government spokesman disclosed the Prime Minister’s directive during the cabinet meeting held in Ranong Province.
Before the cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister expressed sorrow over the incident involving a teacher who was on duty at a school in Chiang Rai on Saturday and was assaulted by a male intruder within the school premises.
Even though the practice of teachers’ duty was in accordance with the Cabinet Resolution dated July 6, 1999, the Prime Minister thought that the resolution is not suitable for the current situation, where there are many personnel and tools available to ensure the security of government premises including schools.
These include security officers, janitors, surveillance cameras, and other resources. Additionally, requiring teachers to be on duty adds unnecessary responsibilities beyond their primary role of providing quality education, said the government spokesperson.
The Prime Minister proposed to the Cabinet to consider exempting schools from the Cabinet Resolution dated July 6, 1999. This exemption would apply to all state schools starting from the Cabinet’s decision onwards. (TNA)
