BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct 9 – Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will encourage Southeast Asian countries to cooperate for food stability and effective water management in the region as the 23th ASEAN Summit kicks off here today.
She talked to reporters on her arrival from Bali at Brunei’s capital to attend the two-day summit on the theme “Our People, Our Future Together” and other meetings.
Ms Yingluck said Thailand looked forward to regional cooperation on water management to fight against floods and create sustainable use of water for agricultural purpose which would help develop food quality and stability.
Regarding regional connectivity, she said leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would discuss land, sea and air transport connections in the region, as well as rules and regulations to be jointly enforced among ASEAN members, such as borders, checkpoints and information technology connections.
She said territorial disputes in the South China Sea would be raised in the meeting as Thailand has acted as coordinator between ASEAN countries and China.
ASEAN leaders and their counterparts from China, South Korea, Japan, India and the United States will dialogue on a range of topics particularly trade and economic cooperation.
