BANGKOK, 3 May 2011 – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has encouraged young people to have honesty, eagerness to learn, and political awareness while the Thai democracy is facing numerous challenges.
In a special lecture entitled ‘Youth and Democracy Development’ with the democratic youth network at Trang Hotel in Bangkok, the prime minister admitted that the Thai society is in need of honest people in the political arena; ones with capabilities to help solve problems.
Prime Minister Abhisit hence hoped that youth will develop political awareness and not stop learning. He also asked the democratic youth network to link itself with other networks for greater power in their movements.
The prime minister noted that the Thai democracy still has many challenges to meet, such as coup d’état, corruption, and intense political rivalry, which must be solved through the behavior and value; while political rights must not be abused and exercised beyond the limit as in the case of political demonstrations.
Prime Minister Abhisit also said the Thai society should realize its responsibility and value in the democratic system since the rights of other people must be respected and not be violated ; while some are making movements for their own rights.
The prime minister said the upcoming House dissolution this week will pave the way for the nation to move forward; however, it does not mean that the next election will lead to peace in the country since political conflict remains intense.
