BANGKOK, Dec 8 — Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said his government is seriously trying to tackle corruption but the attempts would comply with laws and regulations.
In his speech on transparency in organisational administration in Thailand, Gen Prayut also urged the Thai public to reject corruption, dishonest people and anti-graft organizations to inform the people of progress made in eliminating corruption.
“When it comes to investment, other countries attach importance to transparency. The government must build up confidence and thus it must enforce regulations. It does not want the country to suffer further damage,” the prime minister said.
“[The country] must lay foundations for the strength, potential and competitiveness of Thailand in the future. Laws exist to protect all people and provide them with equality. But today people are afraid of laws and enforcers. So I would like to ask all parties to join forces to create positive feelings among people,” the prime minister said.
He said he ordered the Office of the Civil Service Commission to develop acceptable performance indicators for government officials and those failing to perform accordingly would be punished.
He expressed his concern regarding the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and other independent organizations tasked with punishment as they had been under attack.
“This will not happen in the tenure of this government as it will ensure full protection for the NACC and their families so that they will not be attacked by bad [people] using unlawful means. I also would like the NACC to work out measures to protect itself from pressures and danger relating to its work,” the prime minister said.
