BANGKOK, 6 March 2015 – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha vowed to promote gender equality in Thailand so that women can have a better quality of life.

His commitment was contained in his speech on “Two Decades of Beijing Declaration: The Power of Women, The Power of Society” delivered at the opening ceremony of the International Women’s Day celebration held at IMPACT today.

The PM said that nowadays Thai women have taken a greater role in society including political, police and military circles. Most of them work in office jobs dealing with documentation and administrative system which require high patience, accuracy and minuteness. In his opinion, women should be given an equal opportunity to access political sphere. However, he admitted that some careers, such as army chief, do not suit women.

As head of the government, he gave moral support to Thai women to help develop the country and insisted that the government has put efforts to expedite the enactment of gender equality laws as gifts for Thai women. The draft law is under the deliberation of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA).

The PM also assigned the police to stop a planned rally by monks on 12 Mar aimed to terminate the National Reform Council (NRC) committee on the Protection of Buddhism, saying the move was inappropriate for monks.
