BANGKOK, 28 April 2012 – The prime minister is planning to introduce new laws to rein in the country’s water resources management.
PM Yingluck Shinawatra spoke during the weekly “Yingluck Government Meets the People” TV program that Thailand has been assured by China that it will lend a hand to help the country’s Strategic Committee for Water Resources Management carry out its tasks.
The PM said that China has agreed to join in this collaboration following her visit to Asia’s number-one economy.
The Thai Premier said that China has more than 20 years of experience in drought and flood management and is now equipped with strong integrated system to handle all these problems, including the passing of related laws.
Accordingly, Thailand is now planning to issue similar laws to help with the management of water resources.
In doing so, PM Yingluck said more time is needed and a new ministry will have to be set up to take charge of the issue.
And before the new efforts are realized, the government is set to invite specialists from 17 existing ministries and the private sector to help the Strategic Committee for Water Resources Management in assuring the public that there will not be a repeat of last year’s flood crisis again.
The prime minister added that in her meeting with leading Chinese businesspeople during the official visit to China, she had discussed Thailand’s severe flooding and their confidence in the country’s post-flood efforts.
According to the PM, 14 Chinese companies have expressed their interest in setting up a heavy industrial base in Thailand soon.
