Bangkok – Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Rungroj Saengkhram says the arrest of Pol Lt Col Santhana Prayoonrat, an adviser to Don Muang New Market, was carried out according to evidence, not because the police had been pressured to do so.
Santhana has the right to file a lawsuit in his defense against those accusing him of extortion, although he is currently barred from leaving the country and threatening vendors as he could risk having his bail revoked.
The defendant claims the eight people who brought complaints against him are not in fact vendors at Don Muang New Market while Pol Gen Rungroj insists they are.
Meanwhile, police have arrested Kanes Preamkrut, who works for Pol Lt Col Santhana, in Nakhon Nayok province. He was accused of extortion of beauty product vendors at the market. Police are still looking for other alleged perpetrators.
Santhana’s father, Pol Col Somchai Prayoonrat, will be summoned by the police on May 18 after having allegedly violated Section 189 of the Criminal Act by offering refuge to the perpetrator.
