Police have conducted a crisis and incident response drill for its officers and special operations members in Bangkok. The exercise was arranged as part of preparations for November’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Week (AELW).

The recently held exercise involved a shooting and hostage taking scenario inside a mall. Police officers had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills as first responders, with special operations officers also deploying hostage rescue tactics. The exercise took place at The Crystal Ekkamai-Ram Inthra shopping center in Bangkok.

Police commanders and many observers were present during the exercise. These included observers from the U.S. and French embassies as well as Thailand’s Counter-Terrorist Operations Center. Local shoppers inside the mall also witnessed the exercise.

Royal Thai Police Commissioner Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk said the results of the exercise were satisfactory overall. He acknowledged, however, that improvements were needed in certain areas. The exercise allowed participants to review their skills and practice using various types of equipment, but Pol Gen Suwat said tactics must be adjusted to account for unprecedented scenarios and circumstances.

The police chief maintained that he was confident in the capabilities of Thai security forces to ensure safety during the AELW taking place from November 14-19. (NNT)
