More than 130,000 police officers will be mobilized at polling stations across the country, in an effort to ensure the orderliness of the upcoming general election next month. More focus will be given to stations in the eastern and western regions, due to records of incidents in previous elections.
The Royal Thai Police Commissioner General Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas said this arrangement upon his meeting with Secretary General of the Election Commission (EC) Sawaeng Boonmee, and delegates from Thailand Post on the security of the election process.
There will be at least one police officer on-site at some 90,000 polling stations across the country, together with rapid response teams and intelligence units.
Special focus will be given to areas with previous records of violent incidents, particularly Region 2 in the eastern region, and Region 7 in the western region.
The police chief said all agencies have been instructed to familiarize themselves with the guidelines and related laws by the end of this month, ahead of the election day on 14 May.
Pol Gen Damrongsak has advised the general public witnessing any campaign banners obstructing road visibility not to destroy the banners, but instead inform the police for proper removal. Tampering and destruction of campaign banners can be considered an offense punishable by law. (NNT)
