BANGKOK, 13 September 2013 The Police Traffic Division has urged commuters to exercise extra caution on the roads as heavy rains continue to batter Bangkok.

Division chief Pol Maj Gen PiyaTawichai said storms are expected to bring extended periods of torrential rain to many areas which will render roads more treacherous. Drivers are advised to check the condition of their vehicles before embarking on their journey.

The division has assigned officers to help BMA employees drain water from 35 congested spots in Bangkok and to install additional water pumps in a bid to relieve traffic jam. Pol Maj Gen Piya said the most flood-prone roads in the capital include Ratchadaphisek, Kasetsart intersection and Lat Phrao.

Motorists who wish to obtain traffic updates can contact the division hotline at 1197.

The Meteorological Department earlier warned that a monsoon trough covering the upper parts which collided with the southwesterly winds will continue to bring rains to Bangkok and most parts of Thailand during the next few days.
