BANGKOK, 14 June 2015 – The chairman of a committee under the National Reform Council believes that the public can always reject the draft charter that is considered unacceptable.

Chairman of the NRC’s committee on political reform Sombat Thamrongthanyawong said that he believes the adoption of the mixed-member proportional representation electoral system is what can weaken the future coalition government.

Mr. Sombat’s commment was heard following reports that the Constitution Drafting Committee’s resolution to change part of the draft charter which involves the composition of the constituency and the party-list members of parliament at the next election.

The CDC reportedly made a change that resulted in the stipulation that calls for 300 constituency MPs and 150 MPs under the mixed-member proportional representation system.

Mr. Sombat said that, if such a system is put to use, Thailand may experience more administrative problems in the future.

He added that no one should worry about rumors that the NRC will vote down the draft charter as the CDC is still to work on many proposed changes, while stating that an unacceptable draft of the Constitution can always be rejected by the people during the public referendum.
