BANGKOK, 10 January 2013 Pheu Thai Party leader Charupong Reungsuwan has made known that Deputy National Police Chief Pongsapat Pongcharoen is the party’s lead candidate for the upcoming Bangkok governor election.

Mr Charupong said that according to the opinion poll conducted by the Pheu Thai Party, Bangkok voters are looking to support a candidate who aims to tackle drug trafficking and to improve public safety in the capital. He elaborated that the party, therefore, agreed that Police General Pongsapat, who heads the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), is one of the most suitable candidates for the position.

The Pheu Thai leader added that Police General Pongsapat has been approached to run as a candidate in the gubernatorial race but he is yet to respond. The party is set to make its final decision on January 13.

If Police General Pongsapat accepts the party’s nomination, he will be obliged to resign from his current posts at the National Police Office and the ONCB on January 14 before being officially accepted as a Pheu Thai member the following day.
