BANGKOK, Thailand – During a special seminar at Siam Kempinski Hotel in Bangkok on October 7, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra addressed the recent criticism over her use of an iPad during the ACD summit in Doha, which had been widely discussed after a video clip surfaced on social media.
The Prime Minister explained that using an iPad during international meetings is essential for ensuring accuracy, especially when dealing with sensitive topics and specific terminology. She highlighted that when speaking at global forums, particularly in English, there are specialized legal terms and international issues that require careful wording. To prevent any potential misunderstandings, she reads from prepared notes to ensure precision in her statements.
Paetongtarn further clarified that, while some may have viewed the gesture as unnecessary, the stakes in international diplomacy are high, and mistakes could lead to significant consequences. “It’s vital that the information I deliver is accurate and aligned with the overall context of the discussions,” she stated.
She also contrasted the situation with domestic engagements where she speaks in Thai or on topics she is more familiar with, such as investment. In these cases, she noted, there’s less need to rely on an iPad as she can speak more spontaneously.
In her remarks, the Prime Minister acknowledged the mixed reactions online, explaining that while positive feedback boosts morale, negative criticism is part of leadership.
