Princess Srirasmi opens international conference of Buddhists

BANGKOK, 22 May 2013 – Her Royal Highness Princess Srirasmi, the royal consort to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, yesterday deputized for the Crown Prince at the opening of the international conference of Buddhists, held as part of the celebrations on Visakha Puja Day, 24 May. 

This year’s two-day conference is held at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok, on the topic of “Education and Global Citizenship: A Buddhist Perspective”. The conference is designed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the celebration of United Nations Day of Vesak, and the 100th birthday anniversary of His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch as well. The conference also provides a stage to publicize the various benefits that Buddhism has given to the world’s good governance and important intellectual heritages.

This year’s concept of the conference is that the world population is facing with changes caused by natural disasters and crises, social inequality and tensity. Education is the best tool to create inner peace among humanities. It is a force to shape new ways of thinking and acting, to build resilient societies able to adapt to change and mitigate its impact. Fostering global citizenship through education is essential for building genuine and lasting peace.

The conference will suggest the world population to bring the Buddha’s teachings, particularly the Three-fold training involving morality, concentration and wisdom, into everyday’s life, as the practice will bring about true understanding of human nature and quality members of the world’s society.

About 1,500 Buddhist leaders and related experts from 85 countries are participating in the conference
