BANGKOK, 27 December 2013  – The death toll from Thursday’s clash between anti-government protesters and security officers has risen to two after a wounded protester succumbed to his injuries early Friday morning.

The Public Health Ministry’s Medical Emergency Response Center has reported that a total of 153 demonstrators have been injured during the clash at the Thai-Japanese sports stadium, with 36 in critical condition.

A male protester, 30, who was shot in the chest on Thursday died at King Mongkut Hospital at 3 AM Friday morning. His death followed that of Pol Sr Sgt Maj Narong Pitisith, who was pronounced dead at Police Hospital on Thursday.

The center is adjusting its plans to treat wounded people from possible confrontations in the future by focusing its efforts on three risky areas including the Government House, the Thai-Japanese sports stadium and the Metropolitan Police Bureau. The center will also exercise extra caution when tending to the wounded as a number of emergency response personnel were themselves injured during the clashes.
