Bangkok – The Ministry of Public Health is set to implement a multi-pronged policy to promote correct drug use, as well as transparent drug procurement by hospitals.

According to Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Tharet Kratnaiyarawiwong, the ministry developed the policy in response to Cabinet resolutions.

Under the policy, seven measures grouped into three prongs will be enforced to ensure drug quality in hospitals and that patients always receive prescription information for their medication. Hospitals must also take steps to avoid excessive medication, in order to curb drug resistance and the use of antibiotics among patients by 50% and 20%, respectively.

Dr. Tharet revealed that more than 80% of hospitals nationwide are expected to comply with the policy by 2021. He claimed the move would save on unnecessary drug-related expenses and promote safe drug use.

As for medical procurement, certain criteria are currently being developed to ensure transparency and allow any anti-graft agency to examine the process.
