BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Rail Transport reported that Thailand’s rail systems saw 1.51 million trips on New Year’s Eve, December 31st.
This marks an 11.95% increase from the previous year, although it fell 6.20% short of projections. The holiday period from December 27th to January 2nd saw significant rail usage across intercity and metropolitan systems.
Intercity trains, operated by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), accounted for 89,000 trips, a 16.91% increase from 2023 and 14.15% above projections. Key routes included the Southern Line with nearly 29,800 trips, the Northeastern Line with 21,500 trips, and the Northern Line with 15,400 trips. The Eastern and Mae Klong-Maha Chai Lines also saw notable passenger volumes.
Metropolitan and suburban rail systems handled 1.42 million trips, an 11.66% increase from 2023. The BTS Green Line saw 789,000 trips, while the Blue Line MRT recorded 373,300 trips. The Airport Rail Link and Red Line Suburban Rail also experienced increases in ridership. However, slight declines were observed on the Pink Line and Gold Line.
Three minor incidents involving intercity trains caused temporary delays but did not significantly disrupt operations. Urban rail services reported no interruptions during the holiday period.
To accommodate travelers returning to Bangkok, the SRT added five special trains from Hat Yai, Ubon Ratchathani, Chiang Mai, Sila At, and Udon Thani. These additional services were part of broader efforts to ensure smooth and efficient rail travel.
The Department of Rail Transport reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe and reliable travel throughout the holiday season, with measures in place to prevent disruptions and ensure passenger satisfaction. (NNT)
