Former members of the disbanded Move Forward Party have formed a new political party, the “People’s Party”, marking a significant development in Thai politics.
In a gathering at the Thai Summit Tower on Friday, 143 former Move Forward MPs convened to determine the party’s new executives and future direction. The meeting room was bustling with activity as former Move Forward members arrived in high spirits.
The new party, formally named the “People’s Party” with the abbreviation “PP,” has adopted a distinctive logo featuring an orange equilateral triangle.
Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, former deputy secretary-general for information technology and digital development of the disbanded Move Forward Party becomes the new party leader of the People’s Party.
“Today, I feel full of energy. People are joining and moving to our new home together. I’m fully confident we can move forward,” he said.
Nattapong holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Chulalongkorn University. Prior to his political career, he was an executive at absolute.co.th, a cloud solutions provider.
In 2019 general election, he was elected as an MP representing Bangkok’s 28th constituency for the Future Forward Party and was subsequently elected as a list MP for the Move Forward Party in 2023 general election.
The People’s Party’s political ideology statement emphasizes liberty, equality, and fraternity. The party’s founding members expressed a strong belief in the power of people to create positive change and shape a better future for Thailand.
The Move Forward Party, a progressive political party in Thailand, was disbanded on August 7, 2024, by the Constitutional Court.
The primary reason for the dissolution was the party’s pledge to amend the country’s lese majeste law. The court ruled that this proposal violated the election rules. The court also banned its executives, including prime ministerial candidate Pita Limjaroenrat from politics for 10 years. (TNA)
