Bangkok – The Ministry of Finance has extended registration in its 5% VAT refund program, hoping to boost spending during the Chinese New Year.

Lawaron Sangsanit, director of the Fiscal Policy Office, in his capacity as the ministry’s spokesperson, said the application period for the VAT refund scheme is open until February 15 this year. With a 20,000-baht maximum expenditure and a 5% VAT refund, shoppers will be eligible for 1,000 baht back. Only spending on debit cards with savings accounts linked to Promptpay will qualify for the refund.

Those who have already registered but wish to add more accounts to the program can also do so during the extended period. Up to 10 accounts can be registered. Registering additional accounts requires only ID card number and the email address registered with the existing accounts.

Registration can be done via http://www.epayment.go.th

Up to 17 banks and financial institutions and more than 17,000 stores nationwide have joined the campaign.

Refund claimants are required to spend at shops that have electronic data capture connected to point-of-sale terminals to enable their spending information to be directed to the Revenue Department.
