BANGKOK, 9 August 2012  – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation is warning residents in the North and upper Northeast of possible flash floods and heavy rains in the next few days.

DDPM Chief Wiboon Sa-Nguanpong said torrential rains and severe storms in the North of Thailand can cause flash floods, mudslides and forest runoffs in the next two days.

Residents living near hillsides, waterways and low-lying areas are urged to closely follow weather updates and to stay alert for natural warning signs of flash flooding.

Mr Wiboon said the department has instructed provincial authorities and local DDPM offices in the Northern and Northeastern provinces to closely monitor the situation and to prepare rescue gear in case of an emergency.

Flood victims are urged to contact their local DDPM office, or to call their 1784 hotline for further assistance.
