Bangkok – The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) is preparing measures to combat the fast approaching drought season. It is also urging farmers and residents in risk areas to use water sparingly.
RID Director-General Thongplaew Kongchan says that the irrigation zones are likely to have enough water for general purposes throughout the summer. He expects that, if the rain stops in May, there will be enough water reserved for these areas until July.
He said there are 11 non-irrigated zones that are currently facing water shortages in the North, Northeast and the central plains.
Initially, the RID and related agencies have redirected water from the reservoirs in the nearest irrigation zones to replenish natural water sources in these 11 areas. The Director-General further disclosed that officials will dig more groundwater wells. The RID has also deployed 1,935 water pumps nationwide in an effort to deliver water to drought-risk zones.
Nonetheless, Director-General Thongplaew asked farmers and residents in these risky areas to use water sparingly and follow the drought situation closely. He added that they should inform relevant officials immediately if they likely to face shortages.
