BANGKOK, 15 July 2014, – More than 30,000 guns confiscated since the year 2000 will be destroyed today at Bangkok Steel Company Limited in Phrapradaeng District of Samutprakan.
According to acting police chief Police Gen. Watcharapol Prasanratchakit, the guns were seized between the years 2000 to 2013, and the destruction is the first of its kind in over a decade. The destruction will prevent those weapons from being used in future crimes.
The police chief said further that none of the guns to be destroyed today were seized while martial law was in effect as they are still being used as evidence in trials in the court of law.
Meanwhile, Pol. Lt. Gen. Chaiya Siri-Ampankul, the deputy inspector of the Royal Thai Police in charge of the destruction, said the lot to be destroyed consisted of 34,350 firearms, more than 20,000 of which are handguns and the rest are rifles.
