BURIRAM, Thailand – A woman driving from Surin to Bangkok encountered a herd of cattle crossing the road at close range. Unable to brake in time, her car collided with the animals, killing four on the spot. While the vehicle sustained severe damage, the driver and passengers escaped unharmed. The owner of the cattle remains unidentified.
The accident occurred at around 3:00 AM on Highway 24 (Chokchai-Dech Udom), inbound to Nang Rong District. The sedan, driven by 26-year-old Surattikan, was heavily damaged, with its hood crumpled, windshield shattered, and rear section dented.
Surattikan, who was visibly shaken with minor head injuries, recounted that she was traveling with two relatives for business in Bangkok. The road was dimly lit when suddenly, around ten cows ran across in front of her car. She had no time to react, hitting four of them, while the rest of the herd fled into the forest. She credited seat belts and airbags for preventing serious injuries and urged livestock owners to properly secure their animals, especially at night, to avoid such dangerous incidents. She estimated repair costs for her vehicle to be in the hundreds of thousands of baht.
Police found the four dead cows—three female and one male, aged between one to three years. With no owner coming forward, local villagers requested to butcher and sell the meat, with proceeds intended to help cover the driver’s repair costs. Authorities are working to identify the cattle’s owner for compensation and potential legal action.
