BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has reaffirmed that repatriating Uyghurs to China is the most practical and least disruptive option, given geopolitical realities and national security concerns.
Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Russ Jalichandra addressed claims by opposition lawmaker Kannavee Suebsang regarding third-country resettlement offers for Uyghur detainees. While some countries have expressed willingness to accept them, Russ debunked the claim and emphasized that none have provided concrete commitments or assurances to mediate with China, nor have they pledged to support Thailand in case of diplomatic retaliation. He asserted that simply declaring readiness to accept refugees does not translate into a feasible solution, as Thailand would still face significant geopolitical consequences.
Russ acknowledged that a third-country transfer might have been possible over a decade ago before international attention heightened tensions. However, given current circumstances, he argued that no government—regardless of political affiliation—would realistically proceed with such a move due to the severe repercussions. If no resolution is reached, the detainees could remain imprisoned indefinitely, an outcome he deemed both impractical and inhumane.
The vice minister underscored that China has pledged to reintegrate the repatriated Uyghurs into normal society, a commitment that Thailand must consider seriously. He argued that dismissing China’s assurances would undermine broader diplomatic relations. From Thailand’s perspective, securing written guarantees of safety from Beijing represents the most viable solution for all parties involved.
Ultimately, he framed the issue as one of national interest rather than ideological debate, questioning whether Thailand should prioritize its own security and stability or yield to external pressure from Western nations that may not offer tangible support when needed. He reiterated that the government must choose the course of action that minimizes risks to Thai citizens while addressing the situation as responsibly as possible. (NNT)
