BANGKOK, 20th September 2013 Sakon Nakhon’s traditional Illuminated Boat Procession or “Lai Reua Fai,” festival has begun in Tao Ngoi district, to pay respect to the God-mother of the Waters who lives in and protect all rivers.

The purpose of the event is to conserve and support local art, culture and traditions of the Tao Ngoi people, to promote tourism and allow travelers to experience what Tao Ngoi district has to offer.

The festival, now in its 15th year, saw 10 beautifully illuminated boats decorated with natural materials sent in by various Tambon Administrative Organizations in the province, government units and local people taking part in the procession in front of the district office of Tao Ngoi. The procession was accompanied by traditional dancing parades from various communities. The event also included demonstrations of local art and crafts, and a competition on the construction of an illuminated boat. At night, the participating boats, magnificently crafted, were launched at Lam Nam Phung in the Mekong River. The event attracted over 5,000 tourists, both local and foreign.
