SAKON NAKHON, Thailand – Sakon Nakhon province is hosting the 2025 Indigo City Festival from March 28 to 30, with Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol urging the public to support the region’s natural indigo textiles and help strengthen the local economy through cultural tourism. The event, taking place at the King Rama V Monument Plaza in the capital district, is expected to attract widespread attention to one of the country’s most recognized traditional crafts.
The festival has been selected by the Ministry of Culture as one of three regional events to receive national and international promotion in 2025, alongside Ratchaburi’s Wat Khanon Nang Yai Festival and Phuket’s Kebaya Festival. All three are being organized to support year-round tourism and transform cultural heritage into economic opportunities for local communities.
Sakon Nakhon is known as Thailand’s “World Craft City for Natural Indigo,” a title awarded by the World Crafts Council in 2018. Its indigo-dyed fabrics are certified Geographical Indication (GI) products and are among the province’s top One Tambon One Product (OTOP) crafts. In 2024, the indigo industry contributed over 711 million baht in revenue to the province.
This year’s festival will feature a range of activities, including textile and fashion design contests, cultural performances, street food showcases, and workshops on handmade indigo products. The event will include a royal tribute exhibition honoring Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, and a themed race celebrating Sakon Nakhon’s spiritual and cultural identity. (NNT)
