BANGKOK, Thailand – Saysunee Jana has made history at the 2024 Paralympic Games in France, becoming the first female wheelchair fencer to win three gold medals. The 50-year-old secured her third gold on September 6 by defeating China’s Kang Su, making her the first woman to claim victory in all three disciplines—sabre, foil, and epee—at the Paralympics.

The achievement brings Saysunee’s total Paralympic gold medal count to five, with her first win dating back to the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens. Over two decades, she has competed in six Paralympic Games, consistently displaying her dominance in wheelchair fencing.

Her victory in France places her among the top athletes in the sport, joining Roberto Marson, who won three gold medals in individual fencing in 1968. Saysunee’s success also adds to Thailand’s medal tally at the Games, which, as of Friday, stands at six golds, ten silvers, and eleven bronzes, placing the country 16th overall in the rankings.

Saysunee expressed her gratitude to Thailand’s sports authorities and her supporters for their role in her journey to Paralympic success. (NNT)
