Security tightened in Thai South ahead of Hari Raya

SONGKHLA, July 23 — Thailand’s southern province of Songkhla has tightened security measures in preparation for the Hari Raya celebration.

More security personnel, including military and territorial defense volunteers, have been deployed to ensure the safety of local residents and visitors alike in Songkhla’s Hat Yai commercial district as Hari Raya, the day of celebration marking the end of the holy month of the Ramadan draws near.

Business owners and market retailers cooperated by keeping watch on surroundings and suspicious activities to prevent potential violence.

Meanwhile, the Hat Yai tourism sector has begun to bustle, with more than 80 per cent of hotel bookings being made ahead of the festival by both Thai and Malaysian tourists.

Hotel rooms are expected to be fully booked before the Hari Raya holiday which falls on July 28 this year.
