BANGKOK, 10 February 2012 – Several areas which were flooded last year have begun to put flood prevention plans in place.
In response to Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi’s plan to carve Thonburi out of Bangkok for better water management, Deputy Bangkok Governor Teerachon Manomaipiboon said that the move is not the right solution. He added that the water management should be the works of experts; not politicians.
He also said that the Rapeepat Canal, which is the passage to the sea, should not be closed to prevent flooding in Bangkok.
Meanwhile, officials of the Rangsit Municipality in Pathum Thani province have collected garbage around dykes and sluice gates to allow water to flow freely. Authorities from the Royal Irrigation Department have also been fixing the water pumps damaged by last year’s flood.
In Ang Thong province, officials have built concrete walls around economic zones and public buildings nearby the Chaophraya River. The locals believe it is going to rain more this year than it did last year.
