Bangkok – The government has agreed to accept the Siamese Fighting Fish as a national animal, acknowledging its cultural and historical significance as well as economic opportunities.

The decision was made as the Cabinet was also being briefed on joint work between the Thai government and European Union officials to overcome Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the nation. The administration was told about further checks to maintain the lifting of an EU yellow flag and lessons to be shared during Thailand’s role as ASEAN Chair in 2019. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha urged officials to look into the domestic activities of fishing vessels as much as those from abroad.
