Somchai Wongsawat admits meeting Phra Phuttha Issara

BANGKOK, 26 February 2014  Former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat admitted on Tuesday he had a discussion with People’s Democratic Reform Committee leading figure Phra Phuttha Issara, which he said was aimed at resolving the current situation. 

Mr. Somchai explained to press members that the meeting had been arranged by Election Commissioner Somchai Sisutthiyakon. After the meeting, the two individuals agreed on the preservation of the system of democracy under constitutional monarchy and law and order. The two also agreed that demonstration methods should be peaceful and should not involve weapons or closure of state and private agencies’ offices.

Mr. Somchai said the meeting was not a secret, but the two had agreed it was best to refrain from announcing the encounter to the media. He said it was unfortunate that the meeting was publicized on Facebook, as the details might not be accurate or complete. The former prime minister added that the talks was an attempt to resolve the problem plaguing the Thai society, and another meeting between him and Phra Phuttha Issara would be held next week. He explained that the EC wanted the government and the PDRC to work toward a better atmosphere. He also believed that success could be achieved within 2 weeks if negotiations progressed smoothly.
