BANGKOK, 11 April 2013 Songkran activities and celebrations have commenced in many provinces, while Dusit Zoo in Bangkok is all set to hold a 5-day celebration for the summer festival between April 12-16.
Dusit Zoo has re-decorated part of its compound to host a “misty gate” that releases water mist. An echidna, a rare spiny mammal that lays eggs and feeds on ants and termites, will also be on display at the building for nocturnal animals.
According to zoo officials, more shades are being added at animal stages to combat the heat during animal shows. Food and water are also being cooled before being given to the zoo animals. Smaller animals are having their foods frozen before serving, whereas larger animals such as elephants are getting iced soft drinks to cool down.
Elsewhere, people in Mueang District of Chiang Mai have started merit-making activities for Songkran. Locals and tourists are encouraged to make merit by pouring water on a 1,300 years old Buddha statue that has been specially brought out for the occasion.
In Chiang Rai, locals have already brought out water containers and water guns to have soaking fun and to make sure that commuters passing through the Doi Lan- Mae O road become thoroughly soaked.
