BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is preparing for increased travel during the upcoming Songkran holiday, with Airports of Thailand (AOT) confirming additional flight operations across six major airports. Between April 11 and 17, total passenger traffic is projected to approach 80 million, including over 48 million international travelers and more than 30 million domestic passengers. Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai airports are coordinating with authorities to manage the expected volume, deploying extra staff to ensure smoother service and reduce congestion.
International flights are forecast at 267,603, a 9.1 percent rise compared to last year, while domestic flights are set to reach 213,792, indicating a 22.7 percent increase. To support travelers, the Ministry of Transport is offering free parking from April 12 to 16 at four airports: Suvarnabhumi (Zone C), Don Mueang (in front of the five-story car park), Chiang Mai (Lan Chang lot), and Phuket (in front of the AOT office, starting April 11).
Measures to enhance passenger convenience include increased restroom cleaning, fully staffed service points, additional baggage carts, and the use of self-service kiosks and automated bag-drop machines. Biometric registration is available to speed up check-in and security processes. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines regarding safety rules, such as carrying power banks.
In Chiang Mai, officials confirmed that only three buildings sustained damage from the recent earthquake. One older condominium has been closed for safety reasons, while two high-rise towers reported minor non-structural cracks. Repairs are underway, and the rest of the city has returned to normal conditions. Tourist sites, shopping streets, and restaurants remain busy with local and international visitors.
The province is preparing for its traditional “Pi Mai Mueang” New Year celebrations, part of the citywide Songkran festivities. Authorities expect a strong turnout and are promoting cultural events throughout the week. (NNT)
