Southern identity set to link together ASEAN nations

BANGKOK, 2 July 2015 – The Ministry of Culture will introduce an emblem for the southern border provinces as a medium to tighten the relations among ASEAN countries, according to an official.

The Permanent-Secretary of Culture Ministry Apinan Poshyananda has revealed the outcome of the meeting to solve the southern border issues that the meeting has discussed various projects and activities that could be organized to represent the cultural identity of southern border provinces, and to push the area into a cultural center of ASEAN.

He has said that the Ministry of Culture will be responsible for activities that focuses on the combined identity of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei through cultural exchange activities in performance art, livelihood, and foods.

The Ministry of Culture’s initial plan will include traditional performances such as Likay Hulu and Shadow Puppet, performances from companies from the neighbouring countries, exhibitions on clothes and attire such as Batik of the southern provinces, fashion show in collaboration with the neighbouring countries, and the Halal food fair.

The meeting also acknowledged the planned establishment of the Quran museum, designed by the Department of Fine Arts at Narathiwat Province, to attract faithful muslims from the neighbouring countries to visit in the faith tourism campaign. If successful, this campaign will help generate more income to the people in southern border provinces.
