Countries around the world including Thailand will celebrate this year’s “World Oceans Day” on June 8 in a bid to raise awareness on challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.
This year, the World Oceans Day is held under the theme “Together, we have the power to protect the ocean.” Hundreds of events are planned worldwide to help people get involved in solutions for a healthy ocean and society by supporting clean energy choices, trash-free coasts and beaches, sustainable seafood, and more.
In Thailand, the “Art for Ocean” exhibition will be held at the Centara Grand Hotel at Central World until July 15 to mark the occasion. The exhibition is set to draw attention to the importance of ocean and marine life conservation. Featured artworks will include shark sculptures, paintings, and photographs as well as existing works on marine life.
Elsewhere in Asia, Japan will celebrate World Oceans Day by organizing a big festival, aerial art on the beach, sand art workshops, as well as beach and underwater cleanups.
The United Nations General Assembly made a resolution that, as from 2009, June 8 would be designated by the United Nations as “World Oceans Day” during the Conference on Environment and Development, which was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
The oceans are essential to food security and the health and survival of all life, power the world’s climate and are a critical part of the biosphere. The official designation of World Oceans Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the subject.
On June 5, Thailand has also celebrated World Environment Day with campaigns launched to urge the public to conserve natural resources. The Department of Environmental Quality Promotion held events at the Siam Paragon shopping complex under the global theme “Raise your voice, not the sea level.” The event is set to highlight direct threats of global warming on every country including Thailand.
