BANGKOK, Thailand – The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) commemorated its 50th anniversary by hosting a seminar titled “50 Years of the Stock Exchange: Challenges Across Eras”. The event, held at the INVESTORY Learning Museum within SET headquarters, took place at the Maruey Library.
The seminar featured key insights from Kittiratt Na-Ranong, the ninth President of SET, and Suthep Peetakanont, Chairman of Krungsri Securities Public Company Limited. Both speakers reflected on their experiences navigating pivotal economic challenges while shaping the Thai capital market.
Among the topics discussed was the recovery from the 1997 Asian financial crisis. The speakers also recalled efforts to reinvigorate the market in 2003 after a prolonged period of low trading activity. A notable moment in their dialogue was the impact of the 9/11 attacks in 2001, which prompted the temporary closure of SET the following day.
The seminar also addressed Thailand’s capital market development. Key milestones included the establishment of derivatives markets and initiatives to improve investor education. The speakers stressed the importance of close collaboration between the capital market sector and the government. They highlighted examples such as providing tsunami relief through the Thai Capital Market Business Council.
Looking to the future, SET outlined plans to introduce more diverse investment products. These initiatives aim to meet the evolving needs of investors and drive market growth. The event concluded with an emphasis on unity as a cornerstone for the sustainable development of Thailand’s capital market. (NNT)
