The Thai Meteorological Department has warned that a storm forming east of the Philippines is expected to bring heavy rain to many parts of Thailand from Sep 1 through Tuesday. The storm, currently a strong low-pressure area, will likely affect the lower northern, lower northeastern, and central regions, including Bangkok and its surrounding provinces.

Floods and runoff since August 16 have impacted 23 provinces, with Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Nan, Lamphun, Lampang, and Phrae among the most affected. According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the flooding has impacted 102 districts, 419 subdistricts, and 2,266 villages, affecting 69,093 households in total. So far, there have been 22 fatalities and 19 injuries reported.

As of Saturday (Aug 31), 4,026 households across 19 districts in four provinces remain affected by flooding. In Chiang Rai, flooding has impacted 10 districts and 20 villages, with two deaths reported. Sukhothai has experienced widespread flooding, affecting 3,483 households, though water levels have started to recede. Phitsanulok and Nong Khai continue to face flooding, with water levels stable in Phitsanulok but still rising in Nong Khai.

The situation is being closely monitored as authorities prepare for the potential impact of the incoming storm on the already flood-affected regions in the country. (NNT)
