SAMUT PRAKAN, Thailand – Residents of Bang Ya Phraek, Phra Pradaeng district, apprehended a thief attempting to steal electrical wires near Bang Ya Phraek Temple, on January 26, thanks to a stray dog alerting the community with its persistent barking.
Police officers from Samrong Tai Police Station responded to the scene, where locals had detained the suspect, Pridi, along with tools used for cutting wires, including a hammer, knife, saw, and pliers. Approximately two meters of cut wire were also recovered at the site.
The stray dog, a 3-year-old male named “Leaw,” was among three dogs near the area and played a key role by barking at the thief, prompting a temple volunteer and noodle vendor, Jitakorn, to investigate. With the help of others, they surrounded the suspect and called the police.
During questioning, Pridi admitted to the theft, claiming it was his first attempt and that he planned to sell the wires to fund his drug use. A urine test confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in his system. Police charged him with drug use and are investigating further to press additional charges for theft.
This incident highlights the unexpected role of stray dogs in community safety, as “Leaw” became a local hero for his timely intervention. (TNA)
